Project Overview
The Client
Rockford Cardiology Associates, Ltd. (RCA), a 16-doctor group located in Rockford, Illinois specializing in: Consultative cardiology, interventional cardiology, nuclear cardiology, echocardiography, electrophysiology, peripheral vascular medicine, lipidology, preventative cardiology, cardiology research.
For 20 years previously, RCA was housed in a facility constructed in the 1970s. RCA was scattered throughout this 3-story, multi-tenant, building which offered no potential for their growing practice.
The Solution/Project
After extensive site study, RCA decided to purchase a 5-1/2 acre lot on the campus of OSF Saint Anthony Hospital and work began programming for the new facility.
The design of the new 53,000 sq. ft. 2-story building is organized around a patient “ Main Street” with all functions off of it. The 1st floor contains all patient services. The north end of the building contains the exam rooms, organized in 4 pods of 6 exam rooms each. Exam rooms are located around the exterior walls so they can utilize natural lighting along with provider offices. Exam pods share nurse stations and support spaces. The south side of the building is diagnostic: nuclear camera, treadmill/echo, C.T. scanner, future MRI, lipid clinic and pacer clinic.
The “Main Street” patient circulation promises ease of way finding and simplifies orientation within the building. Patients always return to the familiar area on exiting.
The exterior of the building is covered in high performance glass and aluminum panels to express the high technology services offered within. The skin is highly energy efficient in addition to being completely recyclable.
A 3,000 sq. ft. basement accommodates the building’s mechanical systems and storage. Energy efficient concepts were designed into the mechanical and electrical systems to conserve energy without sacrificing comfort. A glass elevator serves the second floor as does a glass atrium staircase.
